The polo shirt has not only become a staple requirement in most men’s wardrobes but, over time, has also earned its place as a fashion classic. You’d be hard pressed to find a man who doesn’t own at least three or four of these comfortable and versatile pieces. Smart and sporty, this style icon is infinitely versatile, which is why it can be your ultimate ally.
The first polo shirts date back to the 19th century, when they were worn by the British Army and named after the game of polo, which originated in India. Back then, polo shirts were made out of thick, long sleeved cotton and looked much like any other shirt but with one ALEXANDER MCQUEEN Skeleton-embroidered cotton-piqué polo shirt Black crucial difference – the collars were adapted, so they could be buttoned down to prevent flapping whilst galloping on horseback!
It was this modification that was noticed by John E Brooks, the grandson of the founder of Brooks Brothers. He quickly spotted the potential of the buttoned-down collars and went on to apply a similar look to Brooks Brothers dress shirts. Now labelled ‘the most imitated item in fashion history’, the Brooks Brothers still claim that their buttoned-down shirts were the original polo shirts.
aape for those of you who don’t know, is the new diffusion line from one of my favourite brands, a bathing ape. the polo shirt is in a special aape branded ziplock bag. so far so good.
you know i’m all about the details so let’s start here. firstly, i’m a big fan of the aape logo. here it is on the inside size tag and also on the piping on the inside of the collar. very nice indeed..
attached to the size tag is a plastic aape logo tag. it’s almost like a key-ring. it’s a decent little thing in itself. bearing in mind this diffusion line is a lot cheaper than replica t-shirts bape, you would have thought they’d have cut a few corners. there’s no real need for this tag. it’s just a nice touch… a cracking little detail. also you can just make out the branding on the outside of the buttons.
there is another label or tab on the outside of the shirt just above the waist. this is one side of it. and this is the other. once again a little over the top. no real need for this label but it’s kind of interesting. it feels like bit of care has been taken with putting this polo shirt together, i mean even the little label itself is stitched rather than printed.there’s also a stitched aape logo on the chest of the polo shirt in the usual placeit’s a really good effort. no lairy back print or anything stupid, just a very decent polo shirt in what seems to be similar materials to the normal bape polo shirts.one last detail. the underside of the collar has two red stripes. ( obviously i’m not going to be stupid enough to walk around with the collar up ) it’s a corking little detail and seems to be a costly thing to do rather than just leaving it all black.
